Upcoming Sunday Gatherings
In the midst of baptizing someone, I offer a few words to describe what is happening. As the person is being lowered into the water, I say, "You are buried with Christ in his death.". And as they are being lifted out of the water, I say "and raised to walk into new life." It is a reminder that in choosing the way of Jesus, we are not ascending to a fixed set of beliefs or taking out an eternal life insurance policy, we are choosing a different way of being in the world - a new way of loving, spending, relating & caring that will give rise to new habits, living situations, relationships, priorities & vocational paths.
As the disciples & other early followers of Jesus were processing all they had experienced & adjusting to the post-resurrection days described in scripture, they must have had all kinds of questions stirring around their hearts & minds. What now? Now that we are getting back to our jobs, routines & rhythms, how do we continue to live into the upside-down kingdom Jesus taught & embodied? How do we live this New Life?
How to get "back to life" though is not just the question that was on the minds of the first disciples or on the hearts of those choosing to begin a more intentional walk with Jesus.
In these pandemic times, it is also the question on our minds.
Right now, in this unsettling season that we find ourselves in, we too are experiencing some stirrings to re-think our way of life. We are seeing the glaring disparities between rich & poor, black & white even more prominently right now. We are questioning the way we spend our time, our money & our energy. Some are enjoying a simpler way of being. We are starting to wonder if we’ve been investing more in maintaining “The Way Things Are” than living into “The More Beautiful World”1 & wondering what might need to be uprooted, rearranged or re-distributed to change the course of things.
While there may not be a map for how to follow these stirrings toward a new way of life, there are companions & guides that can help us along the way. There are those who have stories to share about what they are experiencing as they take steps deeper into a more soulful, connected, just & Jesus-centered way of life.
Join us in our upcoming Sunday gatherings via Zoom as we wrestle with these questions, hear stories from friends & fellow-dreamers, look to Jesus together & consider what new life could look like in the nitty-gritty of our daily lives. We start gathering online at 10 a.m. for casual conversation & begin at 10:30 a.m.
1 In Love Anyway, founder of Preemptive Love Coalition, Jeremy Courtney describes his own journey as one away from “The Way Things Are” in search of “The More Beautiful World.” I love this way of talking about the journey of faith. It is so much more than ascending to a set of beliefs. It is a new way of life.
