A good friday meditation

He came down into this world,

and even though he made all things,

the world did not recognize him.

Even his own tribe did not welcome

or honor him.

- John 1:10-11, First Nations Version

Betrayed, abandoned & unjustly executed, today we remember that Jesus died a criminal's death.

So conditioned to look for Jesus only in what will make us more comfortable, what will make us "good", and what will give us more power, we still struggle to recognize him here.

On Good Friday, we are invited to see him in the places he told us to look ... in the poor, in weakness, in the prisoner, in the discarded & despised, in the neighbor, in the enemy, in the breaking of bread & in all the other seemingly insignificant people & places we tend to overlook.

Today, we pray: Forgive us; we have no idea what we are doing. Open our eyes; help us to see. Amen.
